25 Page PDF File - The author’s 5th great grandmother, Cassandra Knapton (1733-1810), was a direct descendent of Richard Knapton (1530-1597) who lived in Donhead St Mary, Wiltshire, but during his lifetime purchased the Manor of Brockenhurst in Hampshire, thus establishing himself as a wealthy man. The story is an interesting one, in part because of the characters, but also because it’s a clear example of the way in which ‘primogeniture’ is designed to capture and retain wealth in a family’s senior line. Primogeniture is the right, by law or custom, of the firstborn legitimate child to inherit the parent's entire or main estate.
