55 Page PDF File - George Washington Young, the author’s 2nd great grandfather, was the eldest son of a well-respected business owner in Ramsgate in Kent, England. He had every reason to follow in his father’s footsteps, but in 1858, aged just 21 years, he decided to seek his fortune in Australia. His future wife, my 2nd great grandmother, Bridget Teresa Phiibs, was from a farming family in County Cork, Ireland and, at a similar age to George, decided to finance her voyage to Australia. They were what was known as ‘unassisted’ immigrants, paying their own fare, and attracted by the lure of free land grants and the potential of a prosperous new life in a better climate. Certainly Australia was selling its merits in the newspapers of the day, trying to attract young people to its shores to accelerate its population growth.
