50 Page PDF File - Richard Bushnell (1817-1881) and Jane Clarke (1830-1902), the author’s 3rd great grandparents, met and married in Australia in 1849, and their stories are typical, in their own unique ways, of the manner of Australia’s population growth in the first half of the 19th century. Richard was a convict from England, lifted from the bosom of his family in Bristol by a harsh judicial system in punishment for an apparently trivial crime. Jane was an orphan from Belfast and a victim of Ireland’s suffering through the Great Famine. Both were failed by their countries of birth, transported across a vast distance, and brought together by chance. Far from being cowed, they rose to the challenge, demonstrating enormous grit and determination, not the least part of which was in raising fourteen children, twelve of whom reached adulthood.
