53 page PDF - In the course of genealogical research into my own family, the name of Richard Rodman (1841-1912) repeatedly cropped up in relation to their education. He opened private schools in Yetminster, Bourton, Mere, and finally Gillingham, before retiring to Sherborne where, until his death, he remained committed to education as a music teacher. Richard was also a Wesleyan Methodist, lay preacher and class leader. Many individuals in my maternal family lines were also Methodists and this is almost certainly why they chose Richard Rodman to educate their children. In the course of my research, I wanted to shed light on Richard’s background and this led to some unexpected revelations that mark out Richard’s achievements as exceptional given his humble origins.
